**In short:** Switch the bike off and remove the battery, degrease the chain with a brush or chain cleaner, rinse lightly and dry it, then apply one drop of bike chain lube to each roller while turning the cranks backwards. Leave it a few minutes and wipe off the excess. Use wet lube in UK winter weather and dry lube in dry summer conditions, and check chain wear regularly.

An e-bike chain works harder than a normal bike chain. The motor adds force, especially on mid-drive bikes, and many e-bikes cover more miles each week. A dirty, dry chain wears out faster, wears the cassette and chainring with it, and makes the drivetrain noisy and less efficient. The good news is that cleaning and lubing takes about 15 minutes with simple tools. This guide shows how to do it safely on an e-bike, how often to do it in UK conditions and how to tell when the chain is worn.

## What you need

Avoid household oils and spray lubricants not made for chains. They attract dirt or wash off quickly. Never use degreaser near brake discs or pads, as contamination can stop the brakes working properly.

- Bike-specific degreaser or a biodegradable chain cleaner
- A stiff brush, old toothbrush or clip-on chain cleaning tool
- Clean rags or kitchen roll
- Bike chain lube, wet or dry to suit the season
- A bike stand or a helper to lift the rear wheel, if you have one
- A chain wear checker for the final check

## Step by step: cleaning and lubing

Refit the battery, switch on and check that the gears shift cleanly. If a gear skips, the chain or cassette may be worn rather than dirty.

1. Turn the bike off at the display and remove the battery, or switch it off at the battery if it cannot be removed. This stops the motor engaging if you turn the cranks.
2. Shift into a middle gear so the chain runs straight.
3. Cover the rear brake disc with a rag, or work carefully so degreaser does not reach it.
4. Apply degreaser to the chain and scrub with the brush while turning the cranks backwards. A clip-on chain cleaner does this neatly.
5. Wipe the chain with a rag, or rinse lightly with low-pressure water. Never use a pressure washer on an e-bike.
6. Dry the chain thoroughly by running it through a clean rag. Let it air dry if it is still damp.
7. Apply one drop of lube to the top of each roller on the inside of the chain while turning the cranks backwards slowly.
8. Turn the cranks for half a minute, wait five minutes, then wipe the outside of the chain firmly with a clean rag. Lube is needed inside the rollers, not on the outside.

Note: On e-bikes with a motor that can start from crank rotation, always remove the battery or switch the system off before working on the chain. Keep fingers clear of the chainring and cassette while turning the cranks.

## Wet or dry lube for UK riding

Wet lube is thicker and stays on in rain and on wet roads, which suits most UK riding from autumn to spring. It attracts more dirt, so wipe the chain after wet rides. Dry lube goes on thin, dries to a light film and stays cleaner in dusty summer conditions, but it washes off quickly in rain.

Wax-based lubes are another option for clean, dry riding, though they need a very clean chain to start with. Whatever you choose, follow the instructions on the bottle and avoid mixing very different types without cleaning the chain first.

| Conditions | Lube type | How often |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Wet roads, winter, towpaths | Wet lube | Every 100 to 150 miles or after heavy rain |
| Dry summer roads | Dry or wax lube | Every 100 to 200 miles |
| Mixed spring and autumn | Wet lube or all-weather | When the chain looks dry or squeaks |

## How to check chain wear

Chains stretch as the pins and rollers wear. A worn chain wears the cassette and chainring, and on an e-bike that happens faster because of the extra force. A chain checker tool drops into the chain and shows whether it has passed wear limits such as 0.5 or 0.75 percent. Replace the chain once it reaches the limit the tool or your bike shop recommends.

Signs of a worn chain include gears that skip under load, a chain that lifts away from the front chainring when pulled, and noisy shifting even after cleaning. E-bike specific chains are made for the extra load, and many e-bike drivetrains need them, so check the manual or ask a shop when buying.

## Keeping the rest of the bike clean

A clean drivetrain lasts longer, but water and electrics need care. Wash with a bucket, a soft brush and bike cleaner rather than a jet wash, keep water away from the display, battery contacts and motor seals, and dry the bike afterwards. Our [e-bike cleaning guide](https://pedalandvolt.co.uk/blog/how-to-clean-an-ebike) covers the full wash, and the [maintenance checklist](https://pedalandvolt.co.uk/blog/ebike-maintenance-checklist) shows how chain care fits into weekly and monthly jobs.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do e-bikes need special chain lube?** Normal bike chain lube works. Some brands sell e-bike versions for higher loads, which are worth considering on mid-drive bikes.

**Can I use WD-40 on an e-bike chain?** Standard WD-40 is a water dispersant and cleaner rather than a long-lasting chain lube. Use a proper bike chain lube after cleaning.

**How often should I lube my e-bike chain?** When it looks dry or squeaks, after wet rides, and roughly every 100 to 200 miles depending on conditions.

**How long does an e-bike chain last?** It depends on motor type, conditions and care. Check it with a wear tool every few hundred miles rather than relying on a fixed mileage.
