The ABUS Granit Extreme Plus 59 is a chain for locking an e-bike where it lives: a garage, shed, bike store or workplace rack you return to daily. Its strength is reach. At 170 cm it can wrap round a frame, a wheel and a thick post or ground anchor at the same time, something a D-lock cannot do. It also holds a Sold Secure powered cycle Gold award according to the listing.

Good to know
- At 5.7 kg it is too heavy for most riders to carry every day.
- Gold rather than Diamond, so it is a step below the Hiplok locks.
Our take
Construction and security level
ABUS rates this chain at security level 20 on its own scale. The chain links, the lock body and the load-bearing parts of the mechanism are all made from specially hardened steel. Its 12 mm links are joined to the lock using the patented Power Link system, which ABUS says gives a direct and protected connection, removing an obvious weak point.
The lock uses the ABUS X-Plus cylinder, aimed at resisting picking and other tampering.
Weight and why it stays at home
The bullets give 5700 g, while the specification table lists 5.48 kg. Either way, this is far too heavy to carry on most rides. Think of it as a fixed lock you leave at the place you park every day, or pair it with a lighter D-lock for trips.
Daily use and care
A textile sleeve covers the links to protect the paintwork of your e-bike, and a manual keyhole cover keeps grit and rain out of the cylinder, helping prevent corrosion. Two keys are included.
Arrange the chain so it sits off the ground where possible. A chain lying on a hard floor gives a thief something to brace against.
Against the Kryptonite chains
The Kryptonite New York 1217 is the same length and thickness at a similar weight, but no Sold Secure rating appears in its listing. The Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit 1410 set has thicker 14 mm links and a separate Gold U-lock, yet only 100 cm of chain. The ABUS is the one to pick when length and a stated powered cycle grade both matter.
Compared with the Hiplok D-locks, Gold is a step below Diamond, so a chain like this is best in places with extra protection such as a locked garage.
Verdict
Choose the Granit Extreme Plus 59 if you need a long, rated chain to anchor an e-bike at home or work. If you need a lock to carry, a Hiplok D1000 is far lighter, and if you want two locks for layered protection, the Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit 1410 set includes a U-lock.
