The Hiplok D1000 is for e-bike riders who want serious protection against cordless angle grinders but do not want to carry a lock close to three kilos. It holds both a Sold Secure Powered Cycle Diamond rating and an ART 4 star rating, which Hiplok describes as the two highest certifications available. At 1.8 kg it is the most portable of the angle-grinder-resistant locks we compare.

Our take

What makes it grinder resistant

According to the listing, the D1000 uses a specialist composite material built to withstand severe and sustained grinder attacks, with graphene-reinforced hardened steel named in the specifications. Hiplok called it the first portable anti-angle-grinder lock.

Anti-rotation double locking tabs mean both sides of the shackle have to be cut before the lock opens. A rubberised outer on the shackle helps avoid scratching the frame.

Ratings and what they mean in practice

Sold Secure Powered Cycle Diamond is the top grade on the UK scale used for e-bikes and motorbikes, and ART 4 star is a Dutch certification. Holding both makes the D1000 easy to match to an insurer's minimum requirement. Always confirm with your own policy, as wording varies.

The size trade-off

The internal locking area is 155 by 92 mm. That is fine for a typical hybrid e-bike frame tube and a lamp post or Sheffield stand, but it can be tight round an oversized down tube with a battery, or a fat tyre. Measure your frame and the stands you usually use before buying.

Shackle thickness is not given in the listing, so you cannot compare it directly with the 32 mm DX1000 or the 26 mm Kryptonite.

Keys, accessories and warranty

Three coded replaceable keys come with a key code card, so lost keys can be reordered. Hiplok says the lock pairs with its AX1000 and A1000 accessories for a fuller system at home. A lifetime warranty is activated by registering within 30 days of purchase.

No frame bracket is mentioned in the box, so plan where you will carry it. A rucksack or a rear rack strap are the obvious options, and at this weight either is manageable for a daily commute.

The outer dimensions are listed as 22.5 by 15.5 by 4 cm, small enough to slip into many pannier pockets.

Verdict

The D1000 suits riders with standard frame sizes who want Diamond and ART 4 star at the lowest weight in this group. If your frame or tyres are large, choose the Hiplok DX1000 for its bigger opening, and if a bracket matters, the ABUS Granit Super Extreme 2500 comes with one.
