The Hiplok DX1000 is for owners of bulky or valuable machines, such as cargo bikes, fat-tyre e-bikes and even motorbikes, who park in places where thieves carry battery angle grinders. Its distinguishing feature is the combination of a top-tier Sold Secure Powered Cycle Diamond rating with a large 205 by 112 mm locking area. Most high-security D-locks are compact, which makes them hard to fit round a thick e-bike down tube; this one is built for that job.

Our take

Angle grinder resistance explained

Hiplok says the DX1000 uses anti-angle-grinder technology and graphene-reinforced hardened steel, giving much more resistance than a standard D-lock. The shackle is held at both ends by anti-rotation double locking tabs, so cutting one side is not enough: a thief has to get through both.

No lock is unbreakable, and the point of a lock like this is time. The longer an attack takes, and the more noise and sparks it makes, the more likely a thief gives up.

Rating and insurance

The listing states the DX1000 has been independently assessed to Sold Secure Powered Cycle Diamond, described as the highest powered cycle security standard in the UK, and that insurers recognise it for bicycle, e-bike, cargo bike and motorbike cover. If your policy names a minimum grade, this rating should be the first thing you check against it.

Size, weight and carrying it

The 32 mm shackle has a rubberised outer to protect paint, and the inside measures 205 by 112 mm, which Hiplok says fits most motorbike wheels as well as most bikes. The cost of all this steel is weight: 2.75 kg. On an e-bike you will barely feel it while riding, but you will carry it into shops and up stairs.

There is no bracket in the box. Hiplok sells a bicycle bracket and a motorbike lock sleeve separately, so budget for one if you do not want the lock in a backpack. It also works with Hiplok's X Chain, Mega Chain and ANKR anchors for home storage.

Keys, warranty and the D1000 alternative

Three coded replaceable keys and a key code card are included, and the lifetime warranty applies once you register within 30 days. The neon yellow finish is mentioned in the bullets, although the colour field reads all black, so check the variant you order.

The smaller Hiplok D1000 holds the same Powered Cycle Diamond grade plus ART 4 star at 1.8 kg, but its 155 by 92 mm opening is tight on fat tubes.

Verdict

Buy the DX1000 if your e-bike has thick tubes, wide tyres or a cargo frame and you want the top powered cycle rating. If your frame is slim and you would rather carry less, the Hiplok D1000 is the lighter Diamond option, and the Kryptonite New York Diamond sits between them at 2.3 kg.
