The Kryptonite New York Diamond is the brand's answer to angle-grinder theft, built on its long-running New York U-lock. It is aimed at riders who leave an e-bike in busy town centres and want a recognised name with a top Sold Secure grade. What sets it apart is the construction Kryptonite describes: a 26 mm shackle that is double layered and coated in diamond grit to slow a cutting disc.

Our take

How the shackle is built

The bullets list a 26 mm double-layered steel shackle with a diamond coating, and a double deadbolt design, meaning the shackle is locked into the crossbar at both ends. The idea is similar to Hiplok's: an attacker needs to cut twice, and the diamond layer is intended to wear grinder discs quickly.

Materials are given as alloy steel and plastic, and the lock weighs 2.3 kg.

Rating and the missing details

The title states Sold Secure Diamond. The listing does not specify whether that is the pedal cycle scale or the powered cycle scale, which matters if your insurer asks for a powered cycle grade for an e-bike. Check on Sold Secure's own register or with Kryptonite before relying on it for cover.

Internal dimensions are also missing. The outer item dimensions are listed as 26.9 by 17.3 by 6.9 cm, but that does not tell you how much space sits inside the U. Compare with the frame tube and stand you use most often.

Extras from Kryptonite

Two programmes are mentioned: the Key Safe Program, which lets you reorder keys, and a five-year free Anti-Theft Protection Offer. Terms for that offer are not set out in the listing, so read Kryptonite's conditions. The manufacturer warranty is given as limited lifetime.

How it sits against the Hiplok locks

The Hiplok D1000 is lighter at 1.8 kg and states its scale clearly as Powered Cycle Diamond. The Hiplok DX1000 is heavier at 2.75 kg but gives a large 205 by 112 mm opening. The New York Diamond lands in the middle on weight, with a thick 26 mm shackle as its main selling point.

As with any U-lock, it protects the frame and one wheel at most. Riders with quick-release wheels or an expensive rear hub motor may want a cable or second lock for the other wheel.

Verdict

Pick the New York Diamond if you prefer Kryptonite's key and protection programmes and want a thick diamond-coated shackle. If your insurer requires a powered cycle grade, the Hiplok D1000 or DX1000 states it outright, and the DX1000 suits larger frames better.
