The FabricBike Volt is a lightweight folding e-bike for commuters who mix riding with trains, buses or flights of stairs. At 16.5 kg it is far lighter than the other bikes in our folding and budget guides, and the listing gives full folded dimensions, which many rivals do not. It is also the only bike in those guides backed by a two-year manufacturer warranty.

Our take

Folding and carrying

FabricBike says the Volt folds in three steps to 86 cm long, 50 cm wide and 71 cm high. That is small enough for a car boot, a hallway corner or a luggage space on many trains. The aluminium frame keeps the weight down, and FabricBike highlights corrosion resistance, useful for a bike that will spend time in damp stairwells and station platforms.

At 16.5 kg it is still heavier than a non-electric folder, but carrying it up a flight of stairs is realistic for most adults.

Motor and battery

A brushless geared hub motor rated at 250 W assists up to 25 km/h. The removable battery is 36 V 10 Ah, or 250 Wh, and FabricBike claims up to 60 km in assisted mode. The battery is the smallest in our under-1000 guide, so expect to charge it every couple of days on a typical commute. Five riding modes are selected via an LCD display.

Ride and components

The Volt is single speed with a rigid frame and no suspension. On 20 by 2.10 inch tyres, described as robust and puncture resistant, it is best on smooth town roads. Steep hills will rely heavily on the motor because there are no gears to drop into. Brakes are discs front and rear.

The maximum load is 150 kg, and the seat adjusts for different heights. A bell, reflectors and a tool kit are included.

Compared with the other folders

The SAMEBIKE LO26-II folds too, but keeps 26 inch wheels, full suspension and 21 gears, and its listing gives no weight. The LOOKRUN G11 has a bigger 48 V 13 Ah battery, a suspension fork and an IP65 claim, but tiny 14 inch wheels and no stated weight or folded size. The Volt is the one to pick when carrying matters most.

Verdict

Buy the FabricBike Volt if you need a light, compact folder for mixed-mode commuting on flat routes and value a two-year warranty. If you ride hills or rough roads, the SAMEBIKE LO26-II offers gears and suspension, and the LOOKRUN G11 brings a larger battery in a smaller-wheeled package.
