In short
Choose a folding e-bike if storage space, trains or a car boot are part of your routine; it folds small, but its smaller wheels feel less stable over potholes and it usually has a smaller battery. Choose a full-size e-bike if it can live in a shed, hallway or garage: larger wheels ride more smoothly, carry more and suit longer rides. Both can be legal 250 W pedal-assist EAPCs in the UK.

Our verdict
Buy a folding e-bike such as the FabricBike Volt if storage, trains or a car boot shape your riding, accepting a smaller battery and a busier ride. Buy a full-size bike such as the Carpat GB1 if you have ground-floor storage and want a smoother ride, more gears and longer range.
Folding e-bikes solve a real problem for people in flats, on trains or with small cars. But the fold brings compromises in ride feel, weight distribution and battery size. Full-size e-bikes ride better but need somewhere to live. This guide compares the two on the things that matter day to day, using listed specs from bikes in our guides, so you can decide whether the fold is worth it for you.

The table uses figures from the makers' listings. The FabricBike Volt and LOOKRUN G11 are folders with 20 inch and 14 inch wheels; the Carpat GB1 is a full-size 27.5 inch bike. Where the listing does not state a figure, the table says so.

Ride feel and wheel size
Wheel size has the biggest effect on how a bike rides. Larger wheels roll over potholes, drain covers and broken tarmac more smoothly and feel steadier at speed. Small folding wheels accelerate quickly and are nimble in traffic, but they drop further into holes and can feel twitchy, especially with 14 inch wheels. Wider tyres and a suspension fork help.
Folding bikes also tend to have long seat posts and stems, which can flex a little. Full-size frames are generally stiffer, and they come in frame sizes, so the fit is easier to get right. See our e-bike size guide for fit.
Weight, carrying and storage
A folding e-bike is not always light. The FabricBike Volt is listed at 16.5 kg, which is easy to lift into a car boot. Many folders with bigger batteries or fat tyres weigh far more, so check the listed weight if you will carry the bike up stairs or onto trains.
The fold itself is the main benefit. A folded bike fits under a desk, in a cupboard or in a small hatchback. Train operators set their own rules on bikes, and folded bikes are often treated more flexibly than full-size ones, but check before you travel. Full-size e-bikes at around 28 to 29 kg need ground-floor storage, a shed or a garage.
Battery and range
Folders have less space for batteries, so packs are often smaller. The Volt lists a 36 V 10 Ah battery, while full-size bikes in our guides list 374 Wh to 672 Wh. Range depends on rider weight, hills, assist level and temperature, so treat claimed figures as best cases. Our e-bike range explained guide shows how to estimate miles from Wh.
If you ride long distances, a full-size bike is usually the better base. Our long range e-bikes guide focuses on larger batteries.
Gears, hills and practicality
Some folders are single speed, relying on the motor for hills. That works on gentle gradients but feels limiting on steep climbs or above 15.5 mph when the motor cuts out. Full-size e-bikes more often have 7 or more gears. Racks, mudguards and child seats are easier to fit on full-size frames, and some folders have rack limits.
Folding hinges and latches need occasional checks so they stay tight. Follow the maker's instructions for the fold.
Note:Check the folding latches are fully closed and secure before every ride. Follow the maker's manual for the fold sequence and maximum rider weight.
Who should choose which
Our folding electric bikes guide and electric hybrid bikes guide cover both types.
- Flat or upper-floor home, small car, train commute: a folding e-bike.
- Shed or garage storage, longer rides, rougher roads: a full-size e-bike.
- Want both comfort and some fold: look at folders with 20 inch or larger wheels.
- Carrying shopping or a child: a full-size bike with a rack, or a trailer.
