A hybrid e-bike is the everyday option: flat bars, an upright position and tyres that cope with town roads and towpaths. In the UK it only counts as an ordinary pedal cycle if the motor is rated at 250 W and assistance stops at 15.5 mph (25 km/h). Every bike here has a listing that states both, and we left out listings that mention a throttle or an electric-only mode, since those are not road legal without type approval. Beyond that, what separates a good pick is battery size, the gear range for hills, the brakes and how heavy the bike is to lift. This guide compares five bikes on motor, assist limit, battery, wheel size, gears and weight, using only what each maker states.
