The Burley Flatbed is for e-bike riders who need to move things that do not fit in panniers: a crate of tools, compost bags for the allotment, a garden chair or a box for the post office. It is an open platform rather than a tub, and at 6.85 kg it is the lightest trailer in our comparison by some distance. The motor on an e-bike makes a loaded flatbed far more practical than on an unassisted bike.

In its favour

  • Pulls up to 45 kg (100 lb) on a 6.85 kg aluminium frame.
  • Open design takes awkward loads that will not fit a bag.
  • Push-button wheels and a compact fold for storage.

Good to know

  • You will need straps or a crate, as there are no sides.
  • E-bike and thru-axle fit is not mentioned.

Our take

How the open design works

Burley calls it an open air design, meaning there are no fixed walls or cover. That gives freedom to carry long, bulky or oddly shaped items, but it also means everything has to be secured. Plan on ratchet straps, bungee cords or a stackable crate that can be tied down.

Two wheels and Burley's hitch system are said to give good tracking and stability, which matters more as the load rises.

Capacity and frame weight

The listed maximum is 100 lb, close to 45 kg, on an aluminium frame weighing 6.85 kg. That ratio is the main appeal: almost all of the effort goes into moving cargo rather than the trailer itself. The specification table gives dimensions of 83.8 by 78.5 by 40.9 cm.

Push-button wheels and a compact fold allow the frame to lie flat, so it can hang on a shed wall when you are not using it.

Hitch and e-bike compatibility

The box contains a hitch, a tow arm, two wheels, the flatbed and a manual. The listing makes no mention of e-bikes, thru-axles or hub motors, so confirm the right hitch for your bike with Burley first. Warranty is three years on frame and plastic parts and one year on fabric parts.

Flatbed or Rover Hauler

The Retrospec Rover Hauler is the closest alternative. It carries 36 kg, has weather-resistant fabric sides and four D-ring anchors, and fits bikes with 20 to 29 inch wheels, but weighs 11.8 kg. If you mostly carry shopping that needs to stay dry, the Retrospec's enclosed bag is easier. For bulky or dirty loads, the Flatbed's open deck is the better match.

Verdict

Buy the Flatbed if you want a very light frame with a high load limit and you are happy to strap things down. Choose the Retrospec Rover Hauler for an enclosed, weather-resistant bay, or the Burley Coho XC if you ride narrow trails and need a single-wheel design.
