The Carpat GB1 is a 27.5 inch electric hardtail for riders who want one bike for commuting, gravel paths and gentle trails, and who care about buying something with clear paperwork. The listing states certification to EN 15194, the European standard for electrically assisted pedal cycles, and it names Shimano for both the brakes and the gears. Few budget e-bikes on Amazon are this specific, and that is the GB1's main strength.

Our take

Compliance and what it means

Carpat says the GB1 is designed, tested and certified for EAPC (EN 15194), plus REACH, RoHS and UN 38.3. In plain terms, the bike claims to meet the standard that UK rules for e-bikes rely on, and the battery has been through transport safety tests. Buyers comparing anonymous listings will find this reassuring, though it is still worth keeping the paperwork that comes with the bike.

Motor, battery and assistance

Power comes from a 250 W rear hub motor with five pedal assist levels up to 25 km/h and a walk assist mode up to 6 km/h, useful for pushing up a steep ramp. The removable integrated battery holds 374.4 Wh, which is smaller than the SAMEBIKE and COLORWAY packs in our guides. Carpat does not quote a range, so expect it to suit shorter commutes and half-day rides rather than long tours.

Motor torque is not given in the listing either.

Brakes, gears and tyres

Shimano hydraulic disc brakes are the headline component. Hydraulic systems self-adjust for pad wear and need less lever force than cable discs, which helps on a heavy bike in the wet. Gearing is a Shimano Altus rear derailleur with a 7-speed trigger shifter.

The aluminium double-wall rims carry Kenda 2.2 inch knobbly tyres described as puncture resistant, suitable for roads, gravel and light trails. There is a front suspension fork, but its travel is not stated.

Size, weight and setup

The frame is high tensile steel and the bike weighs 28.6 kg, so lifting it onto a car rack or up steps takes effort. The listed minimum rider height is 170 cm and the maximum load is 140 kg. Assembly is required; the box includes the battery, charger, bell, kickstand and a tool kit. Warranty is one year from the manufacturer.

How it compares

The SAMEBIKE RS-A01MEN carries a much larger 540 Wh battery and states 50 Nm, but uses mechanical disc brakes. The SAMEBIKE XD26-II adds full suspension, fat tyres and 672 Wh. The GB1 trades battery size for certified compliance and branded parts that any UK bike shop can service.

Verdict

Choose the Carpat GB1 if stated EN 15194 certification and Shimano hydraulic brakes matter more to you than range. If you ride longer distances, the SAMEBIKE RS-A01MEN has a bigger battery, and the SAMEBIKE XD26-II adds full suspension and fat tyres for rougher ground.
