In short
A blank or faulty e-bike display is most often caused by a flat or badly seated battery, a loose or wet display plug, or a damaged cable at the handlebar. Flickering usually points to a poor connection, while an error code tells you which part the system thinks has failed. Check the battery, then the plugs and cable, then look up any code in your manual.

The display, sometimes called the head unit or control unit, is how you switch on most e-bikes and choose an assist level. When it goes blank, flickers or shows an error, the bike may refuse to assist. The display itself is rarely the cause. More often it is the power reaching it or a connection somewhere else in the system. This guide walks through the checks in a sensible order. Error codes are specific to each brand, so keep your manual handy.
Display completely blank
Start with power. A blank display usually means no power is getting to it.
- 1
Check the battery has charge using its own indicator, if it has one.
- 2
Remove and refit the battery so it clicks fully into place and is locked.
- 3
Turn on the battery's own switch, if fitted, then the display.
- 4
Hold the power button for the time your manual states; some need a long press.
- 5
Follow the display cable down from the handlebar and check the plug is fully pushed together.
- 6
Look for crushed or stretched cable where the bars turn or where the cable enters the frame.
Cold, damp and the handlebar plug
UK weather is hard on handlebar electrics. The display plug often sits just below the stem, where spray from the front wheel and rain running down the cables can reach it. Over time, moisture can corrode the pins and cause a weak or intermittent connection. If your display problems started in wet weather, unplug the connector, let both halves dry indoors, check the pins for green or white deposits, and reconnect firmly.
Cold can also make an LCD screen slow to respond or look faint on a frosty morning. That usually clears as it warms up. Storing the bike indoors, or at least the battery, helps both the display and the battery. Do not spray water or cleaning products directly at the display or its plug.
Display flickering or turning off while riding
Flicker or random shut-offs usually mean a connection that comes and goes. Bumps or turning the bars make it worse. Check the display plug and the main battery connection first, and look at the battery mount contacts for dirt or wear.
A battery near the end of its life can also cause this. Under load its voltage drops, and the system shuts down. If shut-offs happen mainly on hills or when you pull away, read our guide to an e-bike motor cutting out.
Error codes: what they usually mean
Every brand uses its own codes, so the table below is only a general guide to the kinds of fault codes point to. Always check your manual for the exact meaning.
| Fault area | Typical checks |
|---|---|
| Communication error | Display plug, main harness connectors, water in a plug |
| Brake sensor | Lever not returning, sensor plug, magnet position |
| Speed sensor | Wheel magnet moved or missing, sensor cable |
| Throttle or walk-assist | Button stuck, plug loose |
| Battery voltage low or high | Charge level, battery connection, battery health |
| Motor or controller | Motor cable plug; then specialist diagnosis |
Settings and units
Sometimes the display works but shows something odd, such as speed in km/h instead of mph, or a wheel size that does not match your bike. These are settings, and most displays let you change units in a menu. Wheel size settings affect the speed reading, so only change them to match your actual wheel size.
Do not use settings to raise the speed limit. To stay a legal EAPC on UK roads, assistance must stop at 15.5 mph (25 km/h). Changing that turns the bike into a motor vehicle under the law. The UK e-bike law check explains the rules.
When the display needs replacing
If the battery is healthy, the plugs are clean and secure and the cable is undamaged, the display or controller may have failed. On branded systems, replacement displays usually come from the bike or motor maker and may need a dealer to pair them. On conversion kits and simpler bikes, displays are often sold separately, but they must match your controller's protocol and connector.
If water got in after cleaning, let the bike dry fully indoors before testing again, and see our cleaning guide. For other faults, our general e-bike not working guide covers the wider system.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ride an e-bike if the display is broken? On most bikes the motor will not assist without a working display, but you can still pedal it like a normal bike.
Why does my e-bike display show the wrong speed? The wheel size setting may not match the wheel, or the speed sensor magnet may have moved.
Is a display from another brand compatible? Usually not. Displays must match the controller's protocol and plug. Buy one listed for your exact system.
Will a new battery fix a flickering display? Only if the old battery is the cause. Check connections first, and have the battery tested if possible.
