In short
A hybrid bike is a flat-handlebar, all-round pedal bike for roads and light paths. An electric hybrid adds a 250 W pedal-assist motor and a battery, which helps up to 15.5 mph. The motor makes hills, headwinds and longer commutes easier, but adds weight, often around 10 kg or more, plus charging and battery care. If your rides are short and flat, a hybrid is simpler; if hills or distance put you off, the motor is usually worth it.

Our verdict
Pick a plain hybrid if your rides are short and flat and you need to carry the bike often. Pick an electric hybrid such as the Carpat GB1 or SAMEBIKE RS-A01MEN if hills, headwinds or a longer commute put you off cycling and you can store a bike of around 29 kg.
Hybrid bikes are the default choice for many UK commuters and leisure riders, and electric hybrids look almost the same at a glance. The difference is a motor, a battery and a controller, and those change how the bike rides, what it weighs and how you look after it. This guide compares the two side by side on weight, hills, running cost, maintenance and storage, with two electric hybrids from our guides to show typical figures.
What each bike is
A hybrid bike blends road bike speed with mountain bike comfort: flat bars, an upright position, mid-width tyres and mounts for racks and mudguards. It is light enough to carry up a few steps and needs no charging.
An electric hybrid uses a similar frame with a motor, usually in the rear hub or at the cranks, a battery on the down tube or rack and a small display. In Great Britain it must meet the EAPC rules: a 250 W continuous rated motor and assistance that cuts out at 15.5 mph. Our what is an electric hybrid bike guide explains the term in more depth.

These figures come from the makers' listings and show what a typical 250 W electric hybrid weighs and carries. A conventional aluminium hybrid without a motor is usually much lighter.

Weight and handling
Weight is the biggest trade-off. Both bikes above weigh close to 29 kg according to their listings. That makes no difference while the motor is helping, but you will notice it when lifting the bike over a kerb, carrying it upstairs, loading it onto a car rack or riding above 15.5 mph when the motor has stopped.
A plain hybrid feels nimble and is easy to carry. If you store your bike in a flat or need to lift it often, that matters. If it lives in a ground-floor hallway or shed, the extra weight is less of an issue.
Hills, headwinds and distance
This is where the motor earns its place. Pedal assist flattens hills and headwinds, so you arrive less tired and less sweaty, and longer journeys become realistic. Many people who would not cycle five miles each way on a hybrid will do it on an e-bike.
You still pedal, and you can choose a low assist level for more exercise. Above 15.5 mph you ride on your own power, and a heavy e-bike takes more effort than a hybrid at that speed. Our torque vs cadence sensor guide explains how the assist feels.
Running cost in kWh and maintenance
Charging an e-bike uses little electricity. A 540 Wh battery holds just over half a kilowatt hour, so a full charge is roughly 0.5 to 0.6 kWh allowing for charger losses. Our battery and charge cost tool turns that into pence using your own tariff and estimates range from Wh per mile.
Maintenance is where costs build. E-bikes put more load through chains, cassettes, brake pads and tyres because of their weight and torque, so these wear sooner than on a hybrid. Batteries also lose capacity over the years and eventually need replacing. A hybrid has none of the electrical parts, so it is simpler and cheaper to keep running.
Security and storage
E-bikes are attractive to thieves, so plan for a heavy-duty lock and secure storage. Our e-bike lock guide covers locks with Sold Secure ratings. A removable battery can be taken indoors to charge, which also helps in winter. Plain hybrids still need a good lock, but they are lighter to bring inside.
Which suits you
Think about your longest regular ride, the steepest hill on it and where the bike will live. Those three answers usually settle the choice.
- Short, flat rides and easy storage needs: a hybrid bike.
- Hilly routes, longer commutes or arriving fresh at work: an electric hybrid.
- Limited budget for an e-bike: see our electric bikes under 1,000 guide.
- Want to keep your current hybrid: consider a conversion kit.
Frequently asked questions
Is a hybrid bike electric? Not necessarily. Hybrid describes the frame and riding style. An electric hybrid adds a motor and battery.
How much heavier is an electric hybrid? Often around 10 kg or more. The two in our table are listed at 28.6 kg and 29 kg.
Can you ride an electric hybrid with the motor off? Yes. It pedals like a heavy hybrid, which is fine on the flat but harder on hills.
Do I need a licence for an electric hybrid? Not if it meets the EAPC rules and you are 14 or over. See gov.uk for details.
