The CEAYA R8SE is a small-wheeled city e-bike for riders who want something easy to mount, easy to store and ready for shopping from day one. A step-through frame, 20 inch wheels and an overall length of about 160 cm make it more compact than a full-size hybrid, and the box includes a rear rack, front basket, mudguards and kickstand. It is the most practical out-of-the-box town bike in our hybrid guide.

Our take

Motor and assistance

CEAYA describes a 250 W rear hub motor with a peak torque of 75 Nm. You choose assist levels 0 to 5 through the display, and the top assisted speed is 25 km/h. The listing says the motor cuts power when you brake, a helpful safety feature in traffic.

A 7-speed shifter is fitted; CEAYA suggests gears 1 to 3 make it ridable even with a flat battery.

Battery and lights

The removable 48 V 15 Ah lithium-ion battery is claimed to give 75 to 80 km in PAS mode, around 720 Wh at the stated voltage and capacity. LED headlight and tail light are fitted, and a colour display shows the bike's status.

Comfort and size

Tyres are 20 by 3.0 inches, offering cushioning and stability, with a front spring fork. The trade-off is extra rolling resistance on smooth roads. The frame is aluminium and the bike weighs about 25 kg with a maximum load of about 150 kg. Minimum rider height is 160 cm, and the seatpost sits about 60 cm from the handlebar level with height adjustment.

Brakes are 160 mm discs operated by cable. CEAYA presents the pull-line levers as easier to maintain, which is true, though they need more frequent adjustment than hydraulic systems.

Setup and warranty

About 95% arrives assembled; you fit the handlebars, pedals and small parts. The warranty is one year on the motor, frame, controller, battery and display, and six months on the freewheel, charger and some drivetrain parts. CEAYA notes it has no offline repair service, so local bike shops would handle any work.

Against the full-size hybrids

The Carpat GB1 is a full-size 27.5 inch bike with hydraulic Shimano brakes and stated EN 15194 certification, but no rack or basket. The SAMEBIKE XD26-II adds dual suspension and hydraulic brakes on 26 inch fat tyres at 29 kg. Neither matches the R8SE's compact length or included luggage.

Verdict

Buy the CEAYA R8SE if you want a compact, step-through town bike with rack, basket and mudguards included. If you ride longer distances on open roads, the Carpat GB1 is the full-size alternative with hydraulic brakes, and the SAMEBIKE XD26-II adds full suspension.
