Some e-bikes arrive as a frame and motor and leave you to buy mudguards, lights and a rack. The FabricBike E-Stepcity takes the opposite approach. It is a Dutch-style step-through with an upright riding position and comes with the everyday kit already fitted, which suits commuters and shoppers who want one purchase and no extra fitting.

Our take

What comes fitted

FabricBike lists integrated front and rear lights, mudguards, a chain guard and a rear rack. The box also contains a bell, kickstand and tool kit. The chain guard keeps trousers clean, and the rack takes panniers or a basket for shopping.

The handlebar is Dutch style, swept back towards the rider, and the saddle is described as ergonomic. Together they put you in an upright position with a good view of traffic.

Motor, sensor and battery

A 250 W rear hub motor works with a cadence sensor and five assistance levels. Cadence sensing starts the motor when the cranks turn, which feels lively from a standstill but less progressive than a torque sensor.

The removable 36 V battery holds 360 Wh, with up to 60 km quoted. That suits a typical urban round trip, though hilly routes or high assist levels will shorten it. You can charge it on or off the bike.

Frame and components

The frame is high tensile steel, sized 42 cm, on 27.5 inch aluminium wheels with 2.4 inch tyres. Gears are Shimano 7-speed and the brakes are Tektro mechanical discs. The maximum load is 120 kg.

No bike weight is given. Steel frames are usually heavier than aluminium, so if you must lift the bike into a flat or onto a train, ask the seller for the figure. The warranty is listed as two years.

How it lines up

The Qreate City Pro brings hydraulic brakes, a suspension fork and a larger 36 V 15 Ah battery, but you add your own mudguards and rack. The Aairsk SU7 adds front suspension and a card key lock on smaller 24 inch wheels and states a weight of 26.5 kg.

Verdict

The E-Stepcity is the easy choice for flat town riding when you want a step-through that is fully kitted out and backed by a two-year warranty. Riders facing hills or longer commutes should look at the Qreate City Pro for its stronger brakes and battery, and shorter riders may prefer the 24 inch Aairsk SU7.
